Joint Statement

RELEASED  22 February 2024

Act for Peace and the National Council of Churches in Australia have released a statement endorsing the plea for an instant ceasefire in Gaza, backing the Australian Government's appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the region. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has joined the Canadian, and New Zealand Prime Ministers urging a ceasefire.

Over 1 million Palestinians have sought refuge in Rafah, a region that may face repercussions from Israel's proposed military actions.

NCCA

“We are praying for all affected by this violence, Israelis and Palestinians alike, and for an urgent peaceful and permanent resolution to this conflict,” ... “Innocent Palestinian and Israeli civilians cannot and must not be the casualties of the ongoing war.” NCCA President, Rev. John Gilmore.

Rev. John Gilmore, has restated the plea issued on October 20 by 13 national churches to “stop the armed conflict, safeguard civilians, and release the hostages”

Act for Peace's work in Gaza

Act for Peace, NCCA's international humanitarian agency,  has worked with the Near East Council of Churches (NECC) in Gaza for over 15 years providing a range of health and community services in the region. They have faced significant challenges in delivering essential assistance.

World Council of Churches

Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on February 20 to discuss the Israel-Palestine situation and Gaza conflict, emphasizing the need for humanitarian aid access in Gaza. The day before, Rev Pillay met with the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, in Ramallah, West Bank. 

“As a worldwide fellowship of churches, we will continue to accompany the churches and the people in Palestine and Israel on their journey with prayer, action and hope for a better future,” Rev. Pillay.
