In Memoriam

Bishop Saibo Mabo, 15 May 2017

3 thumb 150x150
Our prayers are with the family and friends of Bishop SaiboMabo on the sad occasion of his passing.

Bishop Mabo was Bishop to the people of the Torres Strait, in the Anglican Diocese of North Queensland since his consecration on 24th February 2002 until his retirement in 2015. During this time he championed the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders for Constitutional Recognition and worked passionately for reconciliation between the peoples of Australia.

Although living and working in the remote northern area of Thursday Island, Bishop Mabo was a familiar presence at NCCA meetings, representing the Anglican Church of Australia on the NCCA’s Executive and as a member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ecumenical Commission (NATSIEC). He often spoke of being a ‘Murray Man’ (the island of his birth) and the close connection of his faith to his culture.

Prior to his retirement two years ago he was interviewed by the ABC. You can read the ABC 2015 interview with Bishop Mabo here.

May he rest in eternal peace.
