Human Rights Commission report on immigration detention

“We can and we must do better to protect the human rights of people in immigration detention,” said Human Rights Commissioner Edward Santow.

The Australian Human Rights Commission released a report yesterday, 3 December 2020. The report details the increasing concern for the human rights of people held in Australia’s immigration detention facilities.

The report contains findings and recommendations arising from the Commission’s most recent in-person inspections of Australia’s immigration detention facilities, including ‘alternative places of detention’ (APODs).

Unbelievably, these inspections were carried out before the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation has only deteriorated further. As a nation, we really must DO BETTER!

High Court rejects Minister Dutton's attempt to stop asylum seekers suing for neglect

Home affairs Minister, Peter Dutton has been attempting to skirt responsibility by the Commonwealth Government in the 50 court cases by asylum seekers and refugees. The High Court has ruled that the Migration Act does not prevent people in transit through Australia from suing for neglect.
