40% of families in Makassar, Indonesia survive on less than $2 a day. When floods strike, they lose everything – their homes, their livelihoods, their future.
We can’t stop the floods in Makassar, but we can help change what happens next.
During the last flood season, Wahyudin and his team ferried children across submerged rice fields; not to escape the floods, but to go to school.
Every flood season brings new challenges for families in Makassar, Indonesia. But local leaders like Wahyudin are proving that being prepared saves lives, protects livelihoods, and helps communities stay strong in the face of disaster.
Wahyudin is a husband, father, rice farmer, and a volunteer leader in his local disaster preparedness team, trained by local implementing partner, INANTA, through Act for Peace’s partner in Indonesia, Yayasan Cita Wadah Swadaya (YCWS). Every year, flood waters threaten his community. And every year, Wahyudin and his team are ready.
The team monitor weather warnings, visit vulnerable households, and make sure that children and elderly residents reach safety. And when floodwaters cut families off from the outside world, he gets them across.
“Flooding may not be eliminated,” Wahyudin says, “but the effects can be minimised, reduced and controlled, and that is what we are doing.”
