The National Council of Churches in Australia invites its members to pray for Helen Haines MP, following the alleged attack on her outside her electoral office in Wangaratta.
“We pray for Helen Haines’ recovery, and we hold her family, friends and the wider Indi community in our thoughts at this difficult time,” said Rev John Gilmore, President of the NCCA.
“We are grateful to the community members who acted quickly to intervene, and to the first responders and hospital staff who are caring for her.
“The NCCA is shocked and saddened by what has happened. We utterly condemn political violence in all its forms.
“Politicians of all parties, and particularly women, are experiencing increasing threats and harassment, both online and offline. Words matter, and abusive words can contribute to a climate in which violence becomes more likely.
“We may disagree with policies or feel disillusioned with the political process, but we all have a responsibility to take care over what we say and how we say it. Australia needs a more respectful, kind and dignified public discourse, one that does not resort to personal attacks.
“We pray for healing, and that kindness, respect and peace will prevail in our country,” said Rev Gilmore.
