A new national plan calling on Australian leaders to act on apologies and deliver meaningful change for Stolen Generations survivors has been released by the Healing Foundation.
The NCCA welcomes the publication of ‘From Sorry to Action – A plan to act on Bringing them home (2026-2028)’ and affirms the report’s recommendations.
The action plan asks for firm commitments by governments to specific actions and for progress to be demonstrated leading up to the 30th anniversary of the Bringing them home report in May 2027.
In 2001, the NCCA affirmed the landmark ‘Bringing Them Home’ report and its recommendations. Churches have a long involvement with the Stolen Generations and are still confronting the complexities of reconciling good intentions and genuine concern with the truth of racist policies of the past that led to so many broken hearts and shattered lives.
The NCCA member churches acknowledge their on-going responsibility to contribute to meaningful change, justice and healing for survivors and their descendants, many of whom are members of our churches.
Since 2001, Church leaders have offered apologies, have opened access to records; and many have provided counselling and support services in partnership with Indigenous organisations.
The NCCA will ensure this new plan is brought to the attention of Church leaders and their congregations; encouraging them to address any outstanding matters specific to their churches especially in the areas of access to records, action on apology and redress.
