Atrocities in Sudan continue to alarm the world. The war, which began on April 15, 2023, has forced an estimated 12 million people from their homes. Many of these displaced individuals settled as refugees in nations including South Sudan, Chad, Egypt, Uganda, and the Central African Republic.

At a meeting in Kampala, Uganda (October 27–29), bishops gathered to deliberate on the church’s future in light of the ongoing war and political instability. The bishops warned of a grave crisis affecting the Sudanese population, citing evidence of deaths from starvation, disease, and armed conflict.

We call upon all parties to the conflict in Sudan to immediately cease hostilities,” said the bishops, led by Archbishop Ezekiel Kondo of the Episcopal (Anglican) Church of Sudan

The city of El-Fasher is the primary worry. Since April 2024, the Rapid Support Forces have enforced an 18-month blockade, locking in 260,000 starving people against a Sudan Armed Forces brigade.

As shepherds of God’s people, we express a deep grief and condemnation of the mass killing of civilians in all Sudan, including women and children, and all other atrocities committed by all sides across Sudan,” said the leaders.

The bishops have also implored the international community to pay urgent attention to the war, placing it among their top priorities for diplomatic and humanitarian actions.

The Episcopal Church will continue providing humanitarian assistance that it can to those affected by the war and will persist in praying for peace, healing, and reconciliation,” the bishops said.
