Australian and Pacific theologians reflect on the environmental legacy of Pope Francis
Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si, which focuses on the environment, has drawn global attention from theologians and academics and earned him the label of ‘the green Pope’.
The Pope’s teaching is a call to action to listen to the suffering of the environment and the marginalized, and to respond with justice and solidarity. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of ecological and social justice, highlighting how environmental degradation disproportionately impacts the poor.

ABC Radio National’s Soul Search program on 24 April 2025, was on the topic The ‘green’ Pope Francis and his climate legacy in the Pacific and asked these two questions; How might Francis’ teaching about the cry of the earth, and the cry of the poor matter in our region? And what’s the place of religious leadership in responding to the climate breakdown?
Discussing this were:
- Dr Sandie Cornish, senior lecturer in theology at the Australian Catholic University
- Rev James Bhagwan, General secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches, and
- Rev Dr Seforosa (Sef) Carroll, lecturer in Cross Cultural Ministry and Theology at United Theological College at Charles Sturt University and former Programme Executive with the World Council of Churches.
