Gambling and its Impact in Australia
Is Nothing Sacred?
The NCCA Social Justice Network has chosen the topic of “gambling” for the 2014 Social Justice Sunday resource in the hope of voicing the strong concerns held by the Churches about the encroachment of gambling and its destruction into the daily lives of many Australians. Poker machine reform is no longer on our national political agenda, however the expansion of gambling methods is extending, prompting the subtitle “is nothing sacred?”.
The resource is available in hard copy by phoning or emailing the NCCA. Copies may also be available from either your State Council of Churches or possibly your denomination Social Justice Officer.

Peace in the Marketplace
so all may live in dignity
Our current world economic situation is the subject of many books, lengthy media commentary and diverse expert opinions posing many questions. “Are we prospering, are we doomed, is the demand for our mineral resources going to last, how much of Australia’s natural landscape and ecology can be sacrificed to support our economic growth?” Is the concept of economic growth out dated as it is severely altering the natural world? How do we grapple with the unintended consequences?
The NCCA Social Justice Network has produced this resource “Peace in the Marketplace – So all may live in dignity. to assist in addressing issues of well being, the economy and the challenges such as work life balance, consumerism, and measuring real progress as a nation. Hopefully this will be a helpful tool for promoting discussion across the community.

I Was in Prison and You Visited Me
The number of people in prison in Australia (both sentenced and unsentenced) is increasing faster than population growt h. At the same time, rates for most categories of offending are decreasing. These trends require us to pause and reflect on what is happening in our society and especially, who is most likely to be found in prison. The great majority of prisoners come from impoverished circumstances, often experiencing multiple disadvantage. However, most attention is given to the few high profile, even very wealthy, individuals who engage equally high profile legal advisers to secure their freedom.
The Social Justice Network has produced this resource to assist individuals and congregations to be aware of the alarming facts about prisons in Australia and to advocate for a more just society.

Christian World Service Annual Reports
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2009
In 2009 (which is also the UN Year of Reconciliation), the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity overlaped with the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation. Over 11 days - May 24 to June 3 - including the great feast of Pentecost on May 31 - we therefore had a wonderful opportunity to renew and deepen our relationships in the one God in whom we share together through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. This year's theme appropriately was 'That they may become one in your hand (Ezekiel 37:17) and a variety of resources and links can be found below to assist Australians in joining more effectively in that great wave of prayer begun by Jesus himself when he prayed 'that they may all be one... so that the world may believe' (John 17:21).
The 2009 resources, adapted for use in Australia, are grounded in the experience of the churches in in Korea. In their context of national division the churches have turned for inspiration to the prophet Ezekiel, who also lived in a tragically divided nation and longed for the unity of his people. The resources therefore offer fresh encouragement to churches in Australia to worship together locally, to witness to their unity in Christ, and to pray and act for the greater visible expression of that unity, not least in the context of our journey towards national Reconciliation. Link them into daily and weekly prayers, and with other special occasions (such as the World Day of Prayer on March 6 and National Day of Thanksgiving on May 30) and such prayer will be indeed strengthen God's hand for unity. For the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 2009 is also an opportunity to reflect further on the vital importance of what is sometimes called 'spiritual ecumenism', the foundation of all Christian work for reconciliation and unity. Such a prayer base can further strengthen Christian commitment to seeking peace and reconciliation for all in the worldwide Decade to Overcome Violence.
