Journey of Promise

What was the Journey of Promise?

The Journey of Promise brought together a group of young people from the three Abrahamic faiths in an intensive experience of sharing and exploring faith and culture across a broad range of contemporary life in Sydney; and recorded this experience in a video/DVD for wider awareness, discussion and activities elsewhere.

Who was involved in it?

The Journey of Promise emerged out of the development of inter-faith relationships in Australia, and in particular the work of the Australian National Dialogue of Muslims Christians and Jews, supported by the national peak bodies of each Abrahamic faith.
It was supported by the Federal Govrenment's 'Living in Harmony' initiative.
What happened on the Journey of Promise?
Journey of Promise involved 10 young people (ages 18-25(\) from each of the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths in a journey of encounter and understanding over the course of several months.

Following initial gatherings at three major faith occasions -
Eid Ul-Fitr; Hanukkah; an Orthodox Church Christmas celebration -
the centre-piece was a six-day shared intensive sharing in the diverse life and faith of communities in Sydney (29 Jan - 4 Feb 2004),
living together residentially at Elanora Heights Conference Centre,
with a further celebration on Harmony Day and follow-up reflection.

Activities included:

  • encounters with a variety of places of secular and religious significance ¡V including Indigenous culture and civic life
  • opportunities for individual and group reflection, input and/or facilitation by national, community and faith leaders
  • workshops exploring shared responses to particular issues of importance in contemporary Australian society
