DOVe Flies in The Torres Strait

DOVe FLIES IN THE TORRES STRAIT

DOV in Australia flies on Thursday IslandJon Inkpin, DOV in Australia programme manager, joined with members of the NSW Ecumenical Council in visiting the Torres Strait at the end of October 2003.  They were invited by Peter Sabatino, Executive Director of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Ecumenical Commission, who was taking a period of long leave at home on Hammond Island.

During the visit, the group met Torres Strait Island church leaders and shared something of the work of DOV and the NSW Ecumenical Council.

NSW/DOV group with some church leaders on Thursday Island They also met others in the community and attended the first morning of the Social and Emotional Well-being Summit being held on Thursday Island (through the Torres Strait & Northern Peninsula Area Health Service), learning something more of the challenges, hopes and spirit of the Torres Strait.  Jon Inkpin and Ray Williamson (as Executive Secretary of the NSW Ecumenical Council) were also interviewed on Radio Torres and by Torres Strait News, sharing the message of God's reconciliation with the wider population.

Copies of the NSW Ecumenical Council's Resource Kit on Treaty were also welcomed with great enthusiasm as the kind of resource that the churches and others in the community could profitably use in their struggle to address important issues of self-determination.
