Key Issues: Community Peacemaking

Overcoming Violence in the Community

How do we cultivate peace in our local communities and schools?
What can we do to overcome violence when we run up against it?

Amongst the many inspiring initiatives within Australia addressing these questions are:

* the Alternatives to Violence Project

* Brendan McKeague, the People of the Way in Perth,
and the From Violence to Wholeness program, developed through Pace e Bene

* projects such as the Rough Edges Community Café at St.John’s Darlinghurst in inner-city Sydney,
managed by Laurie Besant, which explores strategies for coping with street violence

* the Burnside Living with Teenagers Programme, which works with young people in coping with
violence and in promoting a wider understanding of the needs of young people at risk

* Church-based community agencies: Waging War in the Community

For each of these projects works with the conviction of faith that violence can be transformed if we learn and work together.
