Raise Your Voice Not the Sea Level

World Environment Day is an important day in the year as it invites reflection and generates dialogue around important issues impacting social and environmental justice in our community. It calls on us as individuals, communities and nations to respond creatively and sensitively to the needs of God’s creation and especially the impact that industrialised societies are having on the poor.

The National Council of Churches in Australia Eco MIssion Project is animating this theme through making a variety of resources available for communities to participate. The Uniting Church has created a resource ‘Raise your voices not the sea level’ for worship, prayer, reflection and practical action. The Anglican Church, through Anglican EcoCare, is calling for papers on ecological and spirituality for a new journal and the Catholic Church, through Catholic Earthcare Australia, is inviting everyone to join a NEEN learning community located in one of the 28 diocese across Australia.

‘Energy efficiency is the first step that faith based organisations can take to reduce their energy use, carbon emissions and energy bills’ said Jacqui Remond the Director of Catholic Earthcare Australia and Convenor of the NCCA Eco MIssion Project.

“It is time for Australian churches to move together in calling for action on climate change. Thinking of our Torres Strait and Pacific neighbours who are living on low lying coastal islands and recognising their vulnerable situation is enough for Christians to act in solidarity. We are being called to live more neighbourly lives, that are much closer to God and all creation.”
