Rev Sealin Garlett: Aboriginal Christianity - My Journey, Our Journey

This was the second of the Light of Australia series. It was held in the beautiful surrounds of the Bardon Conference Centre outside Brisbane. Rev Garlett is a Uniting Church minister and Chairperson of the Uniting Aboriginal & Islander Christian Congress (UAICC). Rev Garlett spoke on his journey to becoming a proud Aboriginal Christian man. He gave the audience an insight into his faith as he shared his story of discovering that Aboriginal culture has an integral role in his understanding of Christianity. Many Aboriginal people felt forced to give up their culture when becoming Christian as they were told that their culture was not compatible with Christianity. Rev Garlett shared how his culture has given him a unique perspective of the Christian faith, one that invigorates his walk with God. The audience was again quite diverse with a combination of non-Indigenous and Indigenous church leaders, social activists and Indigenous young people.
