Make Indigenous Poverty History - Australian Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

Target 4: Eliminate gender disparity all levels of education and participation in the workforce no later than 2015

  • Indicator 9: Rate and level of Post – School qualifications of Indigenous women are the same as for non – Indigenous women. 

  • Indicator 10: Share of women in the labour force is the same for Indigenous women as non – Indigenous women

Target 5: Eliminate disparity in the rate of incarceration of Indigenous women compared to non –Indigenous women.

  • Indicator 11: Ratio of Indigenous women in prison to non – Indigenous women. 

  • Indicator 12: Number of Indigenous women incarcerated is reduced.

Target 6: Ensure proper representation of Indigenous Women at local, State and Federal levels

  • Indicator 13: Proportion of seats held by women in Local, Council and National parliaments.

EDUCATION

Women are less likely than their male counterparts to have a post – school qualification. Less than 10 % of Indigenous women have a post – school qualification.

EMPLOYMENT

Indigenous women are the least likely to be in the labour force with a participation rate of 43 %. Of those that are in the labour force 20 % were unemployed in 1996.

Women are less likely to be in CDEP employment.

Of those employed more than one half worked in government administration, education or health and community services. The same industries accounted for only around one third of all female employment. 

IMPRISONMENT

Indigenous women are 19 times more likely than non - Indigenous women to be imprisoned. This is on the increase there is a 25 % increase in prison rates for women between 2000 – 2004.
