Our work focuses on two main areas in emergency situations:
1) Humanitarian assistance for people affected by conflict such as Sudan Darfur, Timor Leste, Palestine, Lebanon, Gaza and Zimbabwe. 2) Responding to natural disasters such as the Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka and India.
CWS is a member of Action by Churches Together (ACT), an alliance of the World Council of Churches (WCC). It is made up of 225 national churches and agencies around the world. For the past 11 years CWS has worked with and through the ACT alliance on emergency responses.
We work collectively to find solutions and through supporters’ generosity, provide financial assistance needed to rebuild and reconstruct lives.

CWS provides assistance in emergencies to many communities around the world. Whatever the crisis, our on the ground partners ensure effective and timely delivery of assistance. Sudan is one area where, through ACT International, we provide emergency relief.
Sudan is described as one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters of our time. Over 200 000 people have been killed, and 2.5 million people displaced. For years, tensions have grown in this semi arid part of Africa between the mostly black African farmers and the mostly Arab herders, in competition for land. Conflicts began in 2003, when rebel groups began attacking government targets. In retaliation the government launched a military and police campaign in Darfur.
Tensions and violence have escalated ever since. The result is a large number of innocent men, women and children bearing the brunt of political and social unrest.
The ACT-CARITAS Darfur Emergency Response Operation (DERO) is one of the largest humanitarian operations in south and west Darfur. CWS, along with 60 Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox organisations, support the Sudan Council of Churches, SudanAID and the Sudan Social Development Organisation. In camps for internally displaced people antibiotics are distributed, malaria patients are treated, food, shelter, water, and education are provided. The operation also aims to equip Sudanese partners to manage it in the future.
